landlord wants security and 1st month and i cannot move in until late october…?

i found a really great apt in new york!!!!! drove 3 hours to seal the deal… and the realty company says "oh.. we forgot to tell you… we need 1st month and security now"… problem is…

i am getting help with a program to help me pay the rent….. and the protocol is for the landlord to WAIT for any monies…. I ALMOST wrote a check…. but felt a little twinge in my gut….
even had my checkbook there.. prepared to give a deposit…

i listened to them…. and questioned WHY i would even pay for the place when it was not even ready….. and i would be paying TWO rents for the month of october… where i am now,… and new york too!!!!

they replied that it could possibly be ready for oct 15th… but then the agency helping me will not pay half months rent…. AND THEY KNOW THAT!!!

so basically…. they want me to give them 1st month and a security….. NOW!!! i have never ever dealt with that… and the place helping me even said do not give them money up front….

i did sign the lease…… but this is BS !!!!

if you give them a month’s rent and the security deposit, make sure the dates are clearly stated on the receipt, which month it is for
you can’t even get in until the 15th of Oct? I think you should just have them make the lease applicable to Nov. 1, 2009 to————–(yr’s lease?)
forget about even thinking of moving in in Oct. and if your current place is vacated, maybe you can store your belongings for a few days and stay with someone those few days.

    Security deposit and 1st month’s rent to hold an apartment is typical. That’s not out of the ordinary. That’s the norm for landlords to both secure the lease, as well as hold the property until you can move in.
